Do you constantly suffer daytime fatigue despite hours of sleep at night? Do you always wake up with morning headaches and sore throat? If yes, you may be suffering from sleep apnea — a sleep disorder that interrupts your breathing when sleeping. Disrupted breathing robs your body of much-needed oxygen and restful sleep, triggering numerous health complications.
If you suspect sleep apnea in Salem, Oregon, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Shruti Jadeja of White Sage Dentistry. We offer simple, easy-to-use, yet effective treatments to help you win the battle against sleep apnea.
What is sleep apnea?
“Sleep apnea” means breathing interruptions during sleep. Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) experience disrupted breathing when the soft tissues at the back of the mouth collapse, blocking the airway partially or entirely. When your brain senses oxygen deprivation, it awakens your body to breathe, and that’s why you wake up choking or gasping for air.
Some patients suffer from central sleep apnea (CSA). Unlike OSA, CSA isn’t caused by blockage of the airway. Instead, it occurs when your brain fails to signal the body to breathe. The causes of this malfunction include heart failure, neurological disorders, CPAP complications, and substance abuse.
CPAP Alternatives: Treating sleep apnea with an oral appliance
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is usually the go-to treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP therapy involves wearing a mask to allow pressured air to flow through your throat to keep your airway open when sleeping. Although CPAP therapy works, most patients drop them halfway through the treatment because they consider it noisy, cumbersome, and uncomfortable.
If you can’t tolerate a CPAP device, you can still enjoy a restful night’s sleep. Dr. Jadeja offers oral appliance therapy (OAT) to combat sleep apnea. OAT uses a custom-designed oral appliance — similar to a mouthguard or dental splint — worn during sleep to help keep the airway open.
A sleep apnea mouthpiece repositions the jaw and depresses the tongue, keeping your airway open throughout sleep. Uninterrupted breathing at night means you can get sufficient restorative sleep to help you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to conquer the day with energy.
