What Is an Oral Cancer Screening?
An oral cancer screening is a careful look at the soft tissues of your mouth and the areas around it. We check your lips, cheeks, gums, tongue, tonsils, and the floor and roof of your mouth, along with your neck and throat. The goal is to notice sores, patches, lumps, or color changes early, before they cause symptoms you would notice on your own.
Our screenings at White Sage Dentistry combine a hands-on soft tissue exam with Velscope technology, a special light that shows tissue changes the eye alone can miss. Because oral cancer screenings in Salem, Oregon, are part of our comprehensive exams, we compare findings visit after visit and catch anything new right away.

What to Expect During Your Oral Cancer Screening
Your Health Conversation
We start by talking through your health history, any medications you take, and habits that can affect the tissues in your mouth. If you have noticed a sore that will not heal or a rough patch, this is the moment to mention it. You settle into a private treatment room with a pillow and blanket if you like.
Visual and Hands-On Exam
Using a small mirror and gloved fingers, we look over your lips, cheeks, gums, tongue, tonsils, and the roof and floor of your mouth. We also feel along your jaw, neck, and throat for anything firm or swollen. There is no scraping or pressure involved, and most patients find this part takes only a couple of minutes.
Velscope Check and Findings
Next we dim the lights and pass a Velscope handpiece over your mouth. Its blue light makes healthy tissue look different from tissue that has started to change, so we can see areas the eye alone would pass over. Before you leave, we share what we saw, and if something looks unusual we explain the next step, usually a biopsy (a small tissue sample sent to a lab).
