The Symptoms We Hear About Most
If any of these sound familiar, the tooth behind them can often be saved and returned to full comfort.
What Waiting Costs You
Infection spreads deeper
Bacteria can move into the bone around the root, making treatment more involved.
Treatment gets more complex
What starts as one visit can turn into surgery or removal of the tooth.
Costs climb over time
Replacing a lost tooth costs far more than saving the one you already have.
Your world gets smaller
You avoid foods, temperatures, and plans that used to feel effortless.
Fewer options remain
Once too much tooth structure is gone, saving it may no longer be possible.
Weeks of avoidable discomfort
Every week you wait is another week of pain you did not have to feel.
Acting early usually means simpler treatment and a much faster return to comfort.
What Root Canal Therapy Actually Involves
Inside every tooth sits a soft core of nerve and blood vessel tissue. When decay or a crack lets bacteria reach that core, the tissue becomes infected and the tooth cannot heal on its own. Root canal therapy removes the infected tissue, cleans and disinfects the hollow chambers left behind, and seals them so bacteria cannot return. The outer tooth stays right where it is and keeps doing its job.
Accuracy matters here, which is why our team at White Sage Dentistry plans root canal therapy in Salem, Oregon, around detailed imaging. Digital X-rays and CBCT (three-dimensional) scans show us the shape of your tooth’s canals before we begin, and AI-assisted imaging review adds a second look at everything we see.

What to Expect During Root Canal Therapy
Exam and Imaging
We start by listening to what you have been feeling, then take digital X-rays and, when the anatomy calls for it, a CBCT scan that maps your tooth in three dimensions. You see those images with us and hear exactly what they show. By the end of the visit, you know whether the tooth can be saved and what treatment involves.
Getting You Comfortable
Before anything begins, we numb the area thoroughly and give it time to take full effect. Pillows, a blanket, headphones, and a warm scented towel are yours if you want them, and oral conscious sedation is available for anyone who feels uneasy about dental visits. Most patients settle in and notice nothing more than gentle pressure.
Cleaning and Sealing
Through a small opening in the top of the tooth, we remove the infected tissue and clean each canal carefully to clear out bacteria. That space is then filled with gutta-percha, a rubber-like material that seals the canals against future infection. The source of your discomfort is gone before you leave the chair.
Restoring the Tooth
A treated tooth needs protection, so we rebuild it with a tooth-colored filling or, when more strength is called for, a crown matched to the shape and shade of your other teeth. Digital scanning replaces messy impressions here. You walk out chewing normally, with a tooth that looks and feels like it always did.

Recovery After Root Canal Therapy
First 24 to 48 Hours
Expect mild tenderness around the treated tooth, especially when biting down. Over-the-counter pain relief handles it for most people. Stick to softer foods, chew on the other side, and take the rest of the day easy. Sleep usually comes more readily than it has in a while.
First Week
Tenderness fades steadily over the first few days, and normal eating returns quickly. Keep brushing and flossing as usual, including around the treated tooth. If a temporary filling or crown is in place, we will see you back to complete the permanent restoration.
